WHO CAN JOIN THE ROCK STEADY BOXING PROGRAM?
Rock Steady Boxing is designed specifically to address the unique symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Although exercise in general and boxing in particular may be beneficial to people with other neurological diseases, Uppercut’s RSB coaches are certified to train only people with Parkinson’s. You must have an official diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease in order to participate in RSB classes at Uppercut.
HOW DO I START?
First, talk to your doctor and have him/her complete the Physician Verification and Medical Release Form
Then, print and complete the Member Information form
Bring both of these completed forms with you to your assessment appointment.
WHAT IS THE ASSESSMENT ALL ABOUT?
Everyone must undergo a physical assessment by an Uppercut RSB coach prior to participating in class. The appointment will last approximately one hour and will help us get to know you better, determine which class level is best for you, and serve as a baseline for subsequent assessments to track your progress. Our goal is to place you in a class that will be fun, challenging and safe. There is a $35 fee for this assessment.
Please email the gym to schedule an appointment: email@example.com
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE ASSESSMENT? WHEN ARE CLASSES HELD?
Once you have completed the assessment and been approved by an RSB coach, you can start taking classes and fighting back against Parkinson’s!
Our current class is a combined level 1/2. Generally, this is for people whose disease is less advanced and who do not require assistance while walking. We hope to add a level 3/4 class in the future. A 3/4 class would be appropriate for people whose disease is more advanced, whose mobility is more limited, and who may use walkers and/or wheelchairs. If you or someone you know is interested in a 3/4 class, please contact us so we can add you to our waiting/email list.
Our 1/2 classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30. Beginning October 22, we will also offer a 1/2 class on two Saturday mornings each month, from 8:00 to 9:00. The Saturday schedule will be posted in advance and is available online, on the Uppercut Gym app, on the Rock Steady Boxing Facebook page, and in print form at the gym.
Although most of our RSB boxers find that attending class twice a week is most beneficial, you may attend class as it fits your schedule. You do not need to sign up in advance; come when you can.
DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL EQUIPMENT?
The only equipment you need to purchase is a pair of gel hand wraps. We sell them at the gym for $24. You may use our boxing gloves if you wish, though most people ultimately to decide to purchase their own. Ask an RSB coach for recommendations.
WHAT ABOUT MEMBERSHIP?
There are several different membership packages from which to choose. Your choice will depend on how often you plan to attend class and how you would like to pay. Please click here
